They were first made in Afghanistan. I think they were made up of lots of odd scraps and crocheted together. Then at some point the styles became popular in the west, probably because of their practicality of making (anyone can do it). I like making Afghans as you can use up any bits of yarn and make them into multi-coloured squares of any design. Good way of using up scraps and if you don’t like the result, give them to charity!

This entrelac pattern sounds like what you are looking for. You can also look at crochet patterns in the public library. This stitch is also called Tunisian knitting. I hope you are able to finish it as it will be memorable when it is finished. Good luck .

OMG — those would be huge. Although I do have some!Yes, that is called “broomstick knitting” and you can actually use broomsticks for that. I once saw someone using shovel handles, but that is another story.Yes, you need to use yarn that is about half the size of the needles you are using. In this case, I would use several strands together, to make a thick yarn. You can often use colours that are close together, or even some contrasts, to add some dimension to the piece. Just hold the yarns together as if they were one yarn.Is it easy?? Well, I am used to working with smaller needles (about 2 mm), so those would feel monstrous! It would be somewhat awkward, but you will do just fine. It would go fast, but a blanket is fairly large.

Green in several shades would be pretty for either sex….or beige & yellow of different shades…is very neutral…OR wait til you know, you will still have enough time to make the afghan. They are not that big.
