afgans Granny Squares Useful Information

Ok, let us first start with a review of Granny Squares:

I was impressed with Granny Squares plain and simple. When I placed my order, I had in in my hands within 3 days and the price was great. The key is looking for a seller with over a 100 feedback rating on Ebay. I’ve even included the top Ebay listings to Granny Squares in this review to make it even easier on you.

On a granny square can I continue to make it bigger ,or do I have to finish off, and start on another one?
I am beginning to learn to crochet, Granny Squares on making a granny square when I finish a round should I finish off or can I continue working the stitches if I want to make it bigger? I didn't want to make a lot of little ones, I just wanted to continue on that one square. I hope someone can answer my question. Thanks,Catherine

Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve crocheted anything, but I couldn’t resist the hunt. Don’t know if either of these are what you are looking for. The one is not strictly granny squares — more like rounds — but makes a great Christmas tree, I think. The other is more of a tree worked into a number of squares. Hope this is useful. Have fun!!

Well, I found a couple of possibilites:Have a look here:http://www.freepatterns.com/list.html?criteria=christmas+granny+afghan+engand also there’s this stocking…made from Granny squares with a mistletoe pattern…you wouldn’t have to make the stocking, just the squares:http://berryfaerie.blogspot.com/2007/11/grannys-galore.htmlJust go to that page and click on “Granny squares christmas stocking how to”. Hope that’s sort of what you are looking for. Good luck (and an early Merry Christmas)!

My sister just had a baby and got this bedding too!!!I think it would be really cute, and for me, it would go faster to just do straight double crochet. I think it would look nice to make the blanket striped doing 2-3 rows of each color and repeating in the same order. For granny squares, there’s a lot of changing colors and then you have to sew them together. I think the straight stitches would be quicker. If you add a border to it, it will look a little nicer too, less thrown together.I don’t know if she has wall decorations or not, but my sister got 3 canvases, and painted the bird silhouette to match the print in 3 different combos (pink background/brown bird, brown bg/white white, yellow bg/brown bird. It turned out really good and was so easy!

What size do you want your finished blanket? Once you know that, the math should be easy.

Here’s lots of links to granny square ideas and instructions. This includes hexagon and triangle, plus plenty of ideas as to what to do with granny squares, but I can’t for the life of me find a rectangle!

I’ve seen a single square successfully taken lap-robe size several times. I do 36″ square for car-seat use.Wool is more forgiving than acrylic. You can “block” wool to shape, but with acrylic “what you make is what you get”.If your “chains” are no looser or tighter than the rest of the stitches, the finished item should stretch flat. If the chains are *tighter*, there may be a tendency for the item to cup or bowl. The opposite problem is having the edge “flute” like a ruffle.

Using Granny Squares for knitting sweaters and other things is definitely okay.”If you think granny squares are for Afghans only, you’re in for a big surprise. You can make them into sweaters, rugs, pillows and more. And grannies aren’t just squares – they come in a variety of shapes.”http://www.knitting-crochet.com/crochet/gregra.html

Yes, on the last round, you slip stitch to the corner. That way, you are not going higher than the last round, and not adding more stitches, just joining the last real crochet stitch to the first. Also, this way you can tie it off nicely. Have fun!

I think this is what you are looking forhttp://strngbn.tripod.com/diagonale.htmlwhen changing colors, pull the new color through the last two loops of the last stitch, the new color ends the stitch and it’s then on you hook ready to go.There is also a square in two colors done in single crochet which looks nice.http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-8afghans.html

It sounds like a cathedral window quilt. These make great purse projects as they are very portable. Check out this web site to see an example.
