You can either crochet or knit an afghan (also called a throw or a blanket).A good crochet tutorial for this starts here with the basic granny square:http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/granny_square.htmIf you follow the links on that tutorial, other pages tell you how to change colors in the square, and how to join the squares to make an afghan. I’m a knitter myself, and the best place to learn to knit is:http://www.knittinghelp.com/There are lots of free knitting afghan/throw patterns. Some easy ones:http://www.jenipurr.com/knitpurr/archives/000495.html(my first afghan was feather and fan stitch…it’s easier than it looks). http://www.joannes-crafts.com/fast-easy-knit-afghan.htmlBut there are easier things to do. For instance, you can do a “garter stitch” afghan, which essentially means you knit ever stitch, every row. Just cast on until it seems wide enough, and knit ever stitch, every row until it’s long enough, then cast off. Or you can do a rib afghan, that is, knit 2 purl 2 (or knit 3 purl 3, or knit 4 purl 2 or whatever rib combination you like). One word of caution, you cannot do an afghan using stockingnet stitch (knit one row, purl the next row, the most common stitch pattern in knitting) as stockingnet tends to curl in upon itself and doesn’t lay flat. It’s much better for peices that are sown together, such as a sweater or cardigan. An afghan isn’t difficult, as it’s a nice rectangle and doesn’t require shaping, but it does take time and patience (with the exception of the quickie pattern mentioned above). And it does take a lot of yarn, and so can get rather expensive, even with cheap acrylic yarn. Good luck. I hope that helps.

I would go into Froogle.com and key in what you are thinking about buying and see what prices come up.

i have several, wasg in cold water on the gentle cycle. and hang to dry, or put in dryer on low heat, any higher heat will make it shrink.

I like the shell stitch – it’s easy, dense (so it’s warm), and a great 2-color pattern when you alternate colors each row. It’s versatile – it can be bold and masculine when done in ‘guy’ colors, feminine done in pastels or brights, or even modern and textural done in related neutrals (like cream and khaki). It’s a nice holiday afghan, too, when done in your choice of any 2 Christmas colors. Here’s a link to an example of the pattern I like.http://crochet.about.com/library/blsolidshell.htmEnjoy!

How about blue, pink, or yellow. Not the childlike pastel versions but the adult muted tones. Below are some patterns you may like. Mostly I just wanted to show you which colors would work.

Depends a lot on your speed, the stitch you use, any pattern/colouring you use etc.For example, a plainish one in a bigish stitch with a bigish hook 3 hours, the smaller the stitch, and fancier the pattern perhaps you could be looking at a week..

Green in several shades would be pretty for either sex….or beige & yellow of different shades…is very neutral…OR wait til you know, you will still have enough time to make the afghan. They are not that big.

  8. xxXxx Says:

They were first made in Afghanistan. I think they were made up of lots of odd scraps and crocheted together. Then at some point the styles became popular in the west, probably because of their practicality of making (anyone can do it). I like making Afghans as you can use up any bits of yarn and make them into multi-coloured squares of any design. Good way of using up scraps and if you don’t like the result, give them to charity!
