I had a similar book that I found behind a radiator in 1963 that showed how to make draperies and such. Can’t find it right now, but it is kinda old then. Not the same description of the cover, but the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework covers the pretty much the same genre.http://www.amazon.com/Readers-Digest-COMPLETE-GUIDE-NEEDLEWORK/dp/B00162IFN0I have the book and it includes several projects within each category.1963 – I remember a lot about that Fall. We lived in VA and my husband was in the Navy. During the Captain’s inspection on the flight deck, word began circulating that President Kennedy had been shot. That and the events following stunned many of us for weeks, months and years. So – hope you can replace your book. Look for bookstores that have very old books, if you can. Good luck.

Most of the books give you the directions for all stitches needed to create the patterns within. I tend to look back at my crocheting for dummies book often. It will teach you all the basics plus teach you how to adapt patterns for different sizes.Once you get the stitches down… which I’m sure you will, I find crochet easier than knitting… there are some really good pattern books called hooked on toddlers/babies or hooked for toddlers/babiesthe patterns are easy and they give directions from baby sizes all the way to toddler sizes.

There are so many crochet pattern books out there, it’s hard to list them all. If you want to learn to crochet from the book, that makes it a little tougher to find a book. All books have general crochet instructions, but trying to find one that has great illustrations for first time crocheters is hard. These are some of the books I have looked at that I really like:Get Your Crochet On Series (Hip Hats and Cool Caps is the book I would recommend)Fabulous and Flirty CrochetHooked BagsThose are just to name a few. You can find all of them and more here: http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1224453523/ref=sr_pg_8?ie=UTF8&rs=1000&keywords=crochet&rh=i%3Astripbooks%2Ck%3Acrochet&page=1The thing about crochet books is that you have to look through them to see if you like them before you buy them. Everyone has different tastes and let’s face it, there are bound to be things that you won’t like. Here are some of my favorite sites for patterns:http://crochet.about.com/library/blfreepatts1.htmhttp://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PHPSESSID=7b37e183f53207833cae287d3ca844dbhttp://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Projects/Coats+and+Clark+Free+Crochet+Projects.htmhttp://marthac.info/links.htmlhttp://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.phphttp://www.dailycrocheter.com/patterns.htmlhttp://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat843899There are tons more that I have, so if you want to email me, I will send you some more.~Happy Crocheting!~

I dont have the book, nor seen the afghan, but I think going with a bright variegated yarn for the main color and black as a contrasting color would work.

They can not post the pattern on a public forum, it is a copywright infringement. If someone has the pattern they can send it to your private e-mail. Sorry to say that has risk too.Is there something else you can work on in the meantime?

To make a strong bag, I would choose single crochet or single and half-double stitches. You could go down a size or two from the hook size recommended for your yarn ( unless you crochet tightly already). You could double strand the yarn if you have enough. Another option for natural fiber yarns (wool) is to crochet it larger than finished size and then felt it. If you are making a handle or strap, chain the length and then work a few rows the length of the handle/strap rather than crocheting something like 6 or 10 stitches wide and 30 inches long (this stretches). You could also add a lining.I like the looks of this one the best. You will need to create an account. Ravelry has a huge pattern library. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/classy-messenger-bagTo use your three colors, you could work stripes of the 3 colors alternating, work stripes of 2 colors and use the 3rd color for the straps (and accents like edging).I like the looks of this one the best. You will need to create an account. Ravelry has a huge pattern library. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/classy-messenger-bagThis bag looks very nice as well. You could vary the number of pockets. You will need to create an account to access patterns.
