Yes…and I love you for the thought! I’ve worked in nursing homes for a few years and I can tell you that not only would those people love them, they would be very useful. First, many of them do not have much in the way of personal possessions, and you would be surprised how many of the ladies have baby dolls because many of them, sadly, are like little girls. Still others seem to form attachments to replace babies in their lives. As for the afghans, to keep the risk of infection down and for the comfort of the staff the air conditioning is usually kept at a monitored temperature. However, because of age and varying degrees of illnesses, most of the residents suffer from poor circulation and stay chilled (sometimes cold) most of the time. Shawls and afghans are generally welcome additions for any of them. When the resident passes, most of the time the shawls and aghans are redistributed to new patients who are in need. There was even one ladies’ quilting circle who made and donated lap quilts to the residents. Not only are they useful to cover the legs, but make a cheerful and more personal addition to the pretty austere rooms they reside in.A few of the ladies in the garden club came in each spring and fall and did some planting in the day area for them to enjoy as well. There are a good many things people can do for little or no cost to make the final chapter in a person’s life a little happier. I used to go on my day off and sit in the recreation room doing the ladies nails. Even in the last ravages, these are still men and women and there’s still some vanity and dignity left. My heart still breaks for those who hardly every had visitors at all. Sometimes time is the most important and meaningful gift we have to give and it seems in such short supply. You, and people like you are such a blessing!
