The correct thread to sew on buttons to knitting or crochet is with the same yarn that is is made from. If the yarn is very thick you can split the strands lengthways and use part of it. Apparently you will lose points when you “show” your work if you use sewing thread to sew on buttons. I just stitch the button on the same way that you would sew buttons on fabric but leave a long thread at the beginning. When I have finished I simply sew the ends into the back of the article so that they cannot be seen. I rarely lose buttons with this method.

I have seen etsy selling to be very good for some people but it all depends on advertising your etsy store. What seems to help most sellers is to join yahoo groups related to your specific craft and advertise on there and that can draw people to your store. I hope this helps.

An excellent site is this: http://www.knittinghelp.com/If you are more of a visual person, then search on YouTube. There are some really excellent ones (some not so good). Look for Lucy Neatby especially, she is a very good teacher. You will like her. Cat Bordhi has some good videos too, but more advanced techniques, but she is fun to listen to.

You can get a cleaning kit from a reputable Ugg seller, or take them to a dry cleaner. I asked my mother-in-law what she would do, and she said to take them to a dry cleaner.

  6. Kat Says:

Not a good idea, although clever. There’s too much risk of strangulation from something snagging the yarn up. Mother of three Vet Techs:)

  7. seweccentric Says:

Crochet stitches use more yarn and usually produce a bulkier product (all things being equal). Crochet can use up to 50% more yarn on a comparable scaled project.Crochet creates a closed stitch (a knot), whereas knitting stitches are left “open” on the needles (using less yarn).

  8. unique2477 Says:

Handmade gifts show someone that you took the time and cared enough to make it yourself. This tends to mean a lot less nowadays, but to the people who truly love you it will be appreciated. =)

Posterity is all very wonderful and you are fortunate to have such talented relatives. If the items are worth keeping, then aren’t they worth using and/or displaying? My dear, departed step=mother made us a black and white afghan as my father lay dying in the hospital of cancer. when the estate was being wrapped up, she gave us this as a”thank you” gift. It has pride of place and is much-loved.It only comes out in the spring because it clashes with the winter comforter. It is washed and then stored in a Rubber Maid under-the-bed container. I use zipped, transparent blanket bags in which bed-in-the-bag combinations are marketed for other bedding. We have a cedar-lined closet and the blanket bags are put on shelving in this closet.Step-mom made personalized afghans for everyone in the family. As they matured and left home, they took them with them so that they would always have a memento of that lovely lady.Would your relatives want you to “hide” their efforts? Perhaps a shelter for battered women or for children in crisis could use some of your collection.

The advantages of knit are that it’s stretchy and flatter. The downside is that it’s slower and harder to correct mistakes. I suggest you try knitting gloves. It’s possible to do gloves in crochet, but they’re bulky and don’t fit as well because they don’t stretch. The same goes for socks.Good luck!

Both have its own pros and cons and both are different. most people say crocheting is easier than knitting.everyone has there own opinions on this. people like what they do better.crochet is faster but also a yarn gobbler . if you know anyone of the crafts i would suggest learning both.

  12. DY Says:

Buy some shirring elastic thread and hand sew it on the wrong side of the hat. Sew three or four rows around the hat to keep it looking even. The good thing in using shirring elastic thread is it’s fine enough not to be seen yet strong enough to pull the hat in to size.

  13. dalbax2 Says:

Crocheting is much easier and faster. Only 1 hook. I would buy a how to book and start with a pattern in there. It will tell you what you need for yarn and the size hook you will need. Some craft stores also sell how to kits that come with all necessary materials.

  15. Diane B. Says:

Left-handers usually do the *primary* movement in knitting or crocheting with their dominant hand, though some have learned to do them the right-hander way or may be somewhat ambidextrous so will use either hand or whichever way they just happen to learn. If you were asking *how to* knit or crochet when left handed though, check out some of these video lessons:http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=left+handed+knittinghttp://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=left+handed+crochetingHTH,Diane B.

  16. knitting bear Says:

To knit with old clothes, you need to cut the cloth into strips and tie the pieces together to make a ball of “yarn” to knit with, or just a pile. The you would want to use large needles (13′s at least, I would think) and make a rectangle or whatever shape you want the rug(s) to be.

  17. Shelly J Says:

Have you checked out Crochetpatterncentral.com? I always check there first! There are tons of doll clothes patterns there(see sources). If you see something you like but it’s not the right size you can probably adjust the pattern to make it work. Let me know if you need help doing that.Check out this thread on Crochetville, too, there was a whole discussion about doll clothes for 18″ dolls:http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41666
